Today, on this blog, I would like to tell you how we can find God on our path by developing the necessary virtues to reach holiness.

When we say that virtue is in the struggle and not in the reward, we mean that when we make the decision to follow God’s path, we will always face obstacles that will invite us to give up through fear, distractions, temptations, and even sometimes the people around us may suggest returning to old ways. This doesn’t mean that the people are bad, but rather that they simply lack the faith to follow the same path as us.

But why, if God wants us all to be saved and reach Heaven, does He allow these temptations that sometimes seem too big to overcome or hard to resist?

Well, the answer is that God allows these temptations precisely because He wants our soul to respond to His call with greater determination, that we demonstrate courage, strength, and true love for Him. We must keep in mind that all these obstacles on the road help us grow, mature, and also discern between what we want and what God expects from us.

It’s also important to note that tests don’t just come from the outside, since our own human weakness allows us to be attacked by our thoughts and feelings. We may feel insecure about continuing on the path, and we may doubt.

From this point of view, it might seem almost impossible to achieve holiness, but we must remember that we have a wonderful resource that never abandons us—a powerful tool that we can use anywhere, at any time, and that tool is “prayer.” Here, it’s important to make a distinction that might sometimes confuse us. In Spanish, Catholics use two different words for praying “Rezar and Orar” What’s the difference between “Rezar” and “Orar” ? Well, “rezar” refers to the verbal or mental recitation of prayers that have already been written, such as prayers to saints, offerings of works, ejaculations, chaplets, etc., while “orar’ refers to that fraternal and loving conversation we have with God, which helps us be illuminated and filled with the Holy Spirit. It is through “orar” that we achieve full communication with God; it’s our direct phone line, and it is during “orar” that we can better understand the situations happening in our lives that may be affecting us.

On the other hand, we can turn to people who can offer us a fraternal chat that guides us along God’s path. We can seek spiritual direction from a priest, understanding very well that the call comes from God, and we must have an open heart to receive it.

In this sense, we must be aware that the one who gave us the vocation will also give us the means to follow it, as we should not focus on ourselves and our weaknesses but understand that on the path, God gives us the strength to continue advancing, and the closer we get, the steeper the road becomes.

What can we expect when we decide to open our hearts and souls and say “yes” to God?

God takes care of cleansing the soul of those who love Him.

That is to say, at this stage, God takes His role as Father very seriously and shows us what we need to improve, what we must eradicate, and what we must work harder to perfect. It is in this period that we realize the attachments we have to certain things or people that don’t contribute to our sanctification, and God tells us that we need to start changing those vices or those companions. This is not easy, as our appetites are often so deeply rooted that controlling them causes us conflict, and we accomplish this through fortitude, which consists of taking that step of trust. With each step, we detach more from ourselves and the things of the earth and draw closer to Heaven. It is here that our purification process begins.

Trust in God must be absolute.

By nature, we tend to resist situations that require extra effort, and although we know by faith that God is with us, our soul is not yet ready to follow God’s plans. We can see the example of the prophet Jonah, who, after hearing God’s voice and knowing what God asked of him, decided to do something else. He decided to flee and ended up in the sea, swallowed and vomited by a fish. It was only then that Jonah realized that whether he obeyed or not, there was no other option, and in the end, when he prophesied against Nineveh, and God decided to forgive the people, Jonah felt disappointed to the point of wanting to die. But here, God says something very important: “The Lord said, ‘You feel pity for a plant of castor oil that you did not make grow, that in a night sprang up and in a night perished. Should I not feel pity for Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than one hundred and twenty thousand people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?’” (Jonah 4:10-11). This tells us that God’s mercy is infinite, and we must trust in that mercy to continue the path to holiness.

Always keep moving forward without stopping.

If we have already begun the path of sanctification and we fall, we get up, shake off the dust, and continue walking the road. We must keep in mind that our goal is for the soul to love God so much that it can no longer be separated from Him. We must make our purification process so strong that it invites us to take brave and decisive steps, capable of enduring the threats and suffering that may come our way so we don’t stray from our inner path.

If we take these steps holding Jesus’ and Mary’s hands, it will be impossible for God to deny us the strength we need to follow Him, and then we will grow in virtues.

Finding God along the way is often a true challenge, but when you achieve it, the gratification is unparalleled.
